UC Irvine’s Virtual Ambassador Program against driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol (VAP)

Launched in 2021 with the support of an Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) grant, the Virtual Ambassador Program (VAP) is dedicated to combating driving under the influence (DUI) in Southern California. With DUI being a factor in approximately 25% of traffic collisions in Orange County, our mission is to educate and raise awareness about the dangers of alcohol and drug-impaired driving among the county’s large young adult population. Through this targeted approach, we aim to improve traffic safety and well-being within the community.

Central to our strategy is the mobilization of UCI students as Virtual Ambassadors. Driven by their commitment to public health and safety, these students use their social networks to advocate for sober driving among their peers. Supported by Student Influencers, our campaign effectively combines evidence-based data with active community participation, making a real impact in the region.

In ensuring the program’s sustainability and relevance, we are transitioning its leadership to a student-led organization. This move has solidified our foundation within the UCI community and poised us for continued success.

Today, the Virtual Ambassador Program stands as a testament to the power of combining technology, community engagement, and dedication to create safer roads and a healthier society. As we move forward, our efforts are dedicated to a future where impaired driving is eradicated, guided by the energetic engagement of UCI’s students and the wider community.

We invite you to join our network and contribute to our life-saving mission. Together, we can make a difference, promoting safe driving practices and creating a safer environment for all. Your participation can help save lives and build a community of care and responsibility on the road. Join us in our journey towards a safer tomorrow.
